Report on the Study Visit Conducted to Hungary Related to Ukrainian Refugees By the Ombudsman Institution of Türkiye
In the afternoon of the same day, the BOK Sports Hall in Budapest,
which has been converted into a reception centre, was visited. It was
informed that people registered at the border are brought to the centre by
authorities and that for this reason, registration is not repeated for those
who come to the centre. It was added that a written statement is added
to their passports in order to indicate that they have come to the centre
and received support. It was stated that free transportation is provided to
reach the centre. It was noted that there are places to stay at the centre
but that it is used as temporary accommodation, and it was added that
those who come to the centre are placed in hotels. It was explained that
there are doctors at the centre and that since the COVID-19 vaccination
rate in Ukraine is low, they immediately refer those who have symptoms
to testing. It was informed that food and drinks are provided free of
charge. It was noted that not everyone who has come to the province
has applied for asylum and that they have a 30-day temporary residence
permit to make a decision. It was explained that they can reach all their
needs through temporary representative offices of institutions and
that for example, a person who states that they will go to Germany can
get a train ticket immediately and go to the train station nearby. It was
explained that the centre will remain open until the end of the war and
can be expanded if needed.
