III. SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE OF THE
REPUBLIC OF TÜRKİYE WITH SYRIAN
REFUGEES
he movements starting in Tunisia and Egypt at the beginning of 2011,
Tcalled the “Arab Spring”, had a profound impact on Syria. Protests
initiated by the public in Deraa, Syria spread throughout the country as
of 16 March 2011, and Syria found itself in a spiral of violence due to the
violence used by the security forces. The Syrian regime, which refused to
implement the various plans and roadmaps put forward in the regional and
international arena for the peaceful resolution of the conflict, accused the
public, who expressed their legitimate demands and expectations rooted
in their longing for a freer and more democratic Syria, as “terrorists who
aim to disrupt the peace and stability of the country”, and it started to
oppress these demands by using violence. As a result of the massacre
and destruction caused by the violence of the regime, more than 500
thousand Syrians have lost their lives, while around 6.6 million people
have been internally displaced, and nearly 5.6 million Syrians have sought
refuge in the neighbouring and other countries. 3
According to the most recent data from UNHCR dated 12 May 2022, the

number of registered Syrian refugees is 5,718,765 , and 3,763,211 of this
number are hosted by Türkiye. As the countries hosting Syrians, Türkiye
is followed by Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, respectively.
The Republic of Türkiye has a border of 911 kilometres with Syria.
The Republic of Türkiye has implemented an open-door policy as a
