The Future of Human Rights in the 21 Century

About 70 participants from nearly 40 different institutions abroad came together. In
a total of four sessions, around 40 Ombudsmen and Human Rights representatives
took the floor and shared their eperiences
Chief Ombudsman Mr. Şeref Malkoç started the sessions after briefly informing
about the working system and the works of the Ombudsman Institution of Türkiye.
During the conference, the future of human rights in the 21 century was discussed.

The Effects of Digitalization on Human Rights, Human Rights Issues in War, Conflict
and Migration Environments, Human Rights Issues in Pandemic, The Role of Om-
budsmen in the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights in the 21 Century were

addressed in different sessions.
UNHCR Türkiye Representaive Mr. Leclerc: It is very important that Ombudsman In-
stitutions are functional in solving problems within countries and their work are of
great importance.
He mentioned that the role of the Ombudsman is very important for the exercise
of fundamental rights and for a more equal and fair world, and that this field where
problems will be solved through consensus should be used. He also expressed his
thanks for this work to the Ombudsman Institution of Türkiye as well as for the ef-
forts of all the Ombudsman Institutions participating to the Conference.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye and Director for EU Affairs Mr. Faruk
Kaymakcı, greeted the participants and expressed that they are delighted to see
that the Ombudsman culture has become widespread in our country in its new form.
The conference paved the way for the meeting of the Ombudsmen of Türkiye-Rus-
sia-Ukraine and the idea for the opening of an “Humanitarian Corridor” under the
leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, so that victims of the ongoing war
between two countries can reach their families and the safe areas.
The Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Prof. Dr. Mustafa Şentop also
attended the meeting in which, Ukrainian Parliamentary Human Rights Commis-
sioner (Ombudsman) Mr. Dmytro Lubinets and Russian Federation High Commission-
er for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Ms. Tatiana Moskalkova came together, under the
leadership of the Chief Ombudsman of Türkiye Mr. Şeref Malkoç.
The Ombudsman Institution of Türkiye signed Memorandum of Understanding of
Cooperation with the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia and with the
Ombudsman of Sri Lanka.
